About Gary Adler
I believe I have always wanted to be an artist.
My vision of someone creating great beauty has been one of great desire. Somehow, though,
I went in a round about fashion in seeking my goal.
Upon graduating from college I became
an auditor and CPA with Price Waterhouse. After four years and finding the creativity and
management potential restricted, I went to the Wharton Business School at the University
of Pennsylvania where I obtained an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management. After
two jobs in investment banking - each lasting 8 months I decided I needed a new
direction. So I sold almost everything I owned in New York and set out west to become a
self-taught nature photographer.
Since 1987, while residing in Colorado,
I have traveled the West shooting nature in both Black & White and Color. I have also
worked at establishing myself mainly by selling my work in art galleries and shooting
outdoor portraits. In addition, I have on occasion had my work published, such as having
one of my hand painted photographs used on the cover of the annual Colorado Official
Vacation Guide. Other interests I have pursued include doing an historical Jazz radio
program and teaching motion picture analysis at a local college.
When I shoot I look for the beauty in
the geometry I see and then try to capture it in the most perfect light I can find. On
occasion I have waited as long as a year for the right light in the desired season. Also,
it should be noted that I never use "colored" filters when recording images in
color. The cameras I use are a mahogany Deardorff 4x5 field camera and a Hasselblad medium
format system.
The influences on me are many and
varied. They include: Duke Ellington, Lester Young, and Jelly Roll Morton; Picasso,
Michelangelo and Rembrandt; Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Garcia Marquez; Bergman, Hitchcock
and Keaton; and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Recently, I completed a house and
studio I designed in South Park, where visitors are always welcome by appointment. It is
here that I plan to continue exploring the arts. I intend to work at creative studio and
darkroom photography, sculpting, painting, writing and designing houses, as I continue to
travel recording the beauty I discover.
